Chapter 13

Lily

The next morning the sun was beginning to rise in the bright-blue sky and I woke refreshed. I needed to get to the bookstore by seven-thirty. Nikki was going to meet me there and our first task of the day was to be at Chet’s mail truck by seven forty-five. We planned to ask him a few questions about the mailbag since by now Etta would have questioned him too.

I flicked back the covers, taking care not to disturb Milo who was still snuggled on his pillow on the side of the bed. I slid my feet into cozy slippers and hurried to the bathroom to get ready for the day.

By the time I got into the kitchen, the magic of the coffee pot had a rich, aromatic brew waiting for me. Milo was snoozing in the chair. “Good morning, sleepyhead.” I poured a cup and took my first sip.

He grumbled something that sounded like good morning, but I wasn’t one hundred percent sure.

“What’s on your agenda for today?”

“Sleep.” That was clear as a bell ringing. He opened one eye to barely a squint. “You?”

“I have several people to question in relation to Archie’s untimely passing. Chet Harvey, Gil Akers, and I’m going to talk with Noelle too.”

“Didn’t Gage ask you to let him question her?” His eyes burst open and I could see the spark of interest. “Does that mean we’re going back to Robin’s Pointe and have time for tea with Minerva?”

“Yes to the first; yes to the second, and no to the third. It’s the holiday season and I can’t expect Mimi to cover the bookstore every day. I thought I’d call We DOT shipping and ask about Noelle’s route, that’s if she really has one. My plan is to track her down and hope she might be more open to speaking candidly if I catch her off guard.”

He slumped to the cushion as I burst his bubble about tea with Minerva. “I thought she was transparent yesterday.”

That seemed like weeks ago and not simply twenty-four hours. “I don’t trust much that came out of her mouth and remember she stuck to the story she just met Archie, not that they met months ago.”

“Then I’m going to just hang out at the bookstore for the day.” He closed his eyes again and grumbled, “Wake me when it’s breakfast time.”

I nudged the chair he was on. “Hold on there, spark-a-lina. I wanted to ask what you thought about the conversation last night with the gang.”

He pushed himself to a sitting position and shook his little head at me. “To address your phrase, first, I don’t like that new nickname. It sounds like you made it up and second, I’ve been dying for you to ask me about the case, and it only took you ten hours. But I have thoughts.”

I knelt next to him, feeling bad that he felt slighted. Rubbing between his ears as they flattened in contentment, I said, “I’m sorry, Milo, but you know how I get when I’m trying to work through a puzzle.
